Diagnostic Neuroradiology

Site(s): Vancouver General Hospital (VGH) & UBC Hospital*(UBCH)

Overview

Vancouver General Hospital (VGH) is a 950-bed tertiary referral center, located just outside the downtown core of picturesque Vancouver, British Columbia. It is the major patient care, teaching, and research hospital in British Columbia. VGH is a level I trauma center and a major referral center for a number of specialties, with 9 staff neurosurgeons, 25 neurologists, a dedicated acute stroke service, and a world-class spine surgical service. Within the Department of Radiology, the Division of Neuroradiology has 7 staff neuroradiologists.

The Diagnostic Neuroradiology fellowship at VGH is a one or two-year fellowship, with four fully funded positions available annually. In addition, our two-year Diagnostic Neuroradiology Residency program is now accredited by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC). If you meet the eligibility criteria and are interested, please visit our new website.

Fellows will become proficient in the diagnostic modalities of plain radiography, CT, and MR, in all areas of neuroradiology, including imaging of the head, neck, and spine, as well as non-invasive vascular imaging. Fellows will gain experience in current and developing techniques such as CT and MR perfusion imaging, diffusion tensor imaging, and spectroscopy.

The one-year fellowship’s main emphasis is diagnostic and spine procedures with or without exposure to catheter angiography. A second-year fellowship provides the opportunity to deepen your understanding of all aspects of neuroradiology and to focus more on an area of interest (i.e. head & neck imaging, angiography, research, etc). All fellows get exposure to diagnostic and interventional angiography, however, the level of actual participation in the angiography suite will be adjusted individually. Elective rotations in Pediatric Neuroradiology at the BC Children’s Hospital, Oncologic Head and Neck Imaging at the neighbouring BC Cancer Agency, and Stroke Neurology are available.

Weekly interdisciplinary rounds include neurosurgery, spine surgery, stroke, head and neck cancer rounds, along with grand rounds in radiology and neurosciences. Dedicated research/academic time is provided and fellows will be expected to complete at least one academic project during their fellowship. Fellows will provide at-home neuroradiology call on a 1 in 4 or 1 in 5 rotation, with staff neuroradiologist backup. Radiology residents provide 24-hour primary in-house call, with VGH also offering a 24/7 Emergency Radiology service.
